Summer Learning Blog Treasure Hunt

Summer Learning Blog Treasure Hunt

Over the summer, I keep a summer learning blog, with links to some of my favorite websites, the Holy Trinity Summer Reading Lists, and your summer assignments.  The 7th grade assignment for next year has not yet been finalized, but I would like you to spend this class exploring the websites that were posted on my blog last summer, and answer a series of questions for me… to help me plan what I should focus on this summer…

Try to fill out as much as you can during class time.  I have given you a long list of questions, so you may not quite finish.  I will be traveling this week, but I would like you to copy and paste this document into an Email and send it to me at the end of class...

mbmorell@htsdc.org

Try a few of the new typing games from the most recent post.  Which is your favorite?  Why?
Go to the Read, Kiddo, Read website.  Read through possible book choices for your age level.  Name three new books that look interesting to you that you might want to try this summer.
1.
2.
3.
Tell me your favorite book you have read this year.  Is it on the HTS Summer Reading List for 5th and 6th graders? Should it be?  Why
Try a few of the creative tools on the NGA website for kids.  Tell me two of your favorites, and why?
1. 2.
Do you have an iPad at home  Do you think I should put recommendations for Apps on my blog this summer?
What are your favorite CoolMath4Kids games?  Which ones should I feature on the blog this summer?
What is your favorite book on the list “100 Picture Books Everyone Should know?”  And do you have a favorite that didn’t make the list
What is your favorite Edheads game?
Do you have a favorite Cyberchase math game?  What is it?
What is your favorite children’s book that has been made into a movie?
What is your favorite author website?

If you were the computer teacher, and designed a summer learning blog, what would be on it?

More National Parks Project

Even if you haven't quite finished your National Parks research, I'd like you to move onto designing your glog today, as we will have Scantron testing during the next two or three weeks.

The link to Glogster Edu is here:

http://edu.glogster.com/login

If you can't remember your login and/or password, is on a page on the right of the blog...

Please work carefully from the rubric the sub will give to you this morning... Sorry I can't be there - my son Peter broke his ankle this week, and we'll be getting a cast put on this morning :(

See you soon.

National Park Project

Now that you've explored the far reaches of the world with your Around the World project, we're going to turn our attention to some of the wonders of the United States.  Each of you will choose a National Park to research, and then create a Glogster poster.

(You may use the rest of the class period today to finish your around the World Project, if you need to)

To introduce you to a few of the National Parks, we'll start by watching this video from the National Parks and Conservation Assocation:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dq6_1fGKfpY

The research file can be found in your network folder, but a copy of it can be found below.  You must complete the research and get it checked by me before you can begin your Glog.

Here are a few samples of the projects from last year:

Student Research Sheet

This project will take most of the fourth quarter.  First, you must choose a National Park to research. A list of resources can be found on Mrs. Morell’s Websites of the Week – the best place to start would be the National Park Service Website.

You will be evaluated the following elements:

·         The research you complete on this worksheet.

·         A bibliography – or works cited page.  Keep in mind you must cite every photo collected, and every web-based resource you use.  Please create a word document in your network folder, and keep a running bibliography as you research.

·         The final presentation of your research.  I would like you to create a Glog of your National Park.

Park Location
State:

Closest “big city” to your park:

What other parks are close to your park?:

Which States would you travel through to reach your National Park?

Physical Characteristics
Size of the park (in acres):

Climate (temp and weather):

List and describe at least 3 interesting geologic features:

Find and save at least one picture of each cool geologic feature.
Cite EACH picture in your bibliography.

Park Plants
List and describe at least 3 interesting plants:

Why did you include these plants?
Where in the park would you see them?
Find and save at least one picture of each cool plant.
Cite EACH picture in your bibliography.

Park Animals
List and describe at least 5 interesting animals:

Why did you include these animals?
Find and save at least one picture of each cool animal.
Cite EACH picture in your bibliography.

Human Characteristics
When was the park created?

What was the park created to protect or preserve?

Number of visitors each year:

List and describe at least 3 of the most popular things to do or to visit:

Why are these places and things popular?

Find and save at least one picture of each popular thing to do and visit.
Cite EACH picture in your bibliography.

Websites to use:

Most of your information can be found on the National Park Service website:

And the National Parks Conservation Association is another great resource:

Where in the World was Mrs. Morell?

Last week, I had the opportunity to travel to West Africa for a bit of an adventure.  Can anyone figure out where I was?

This week, I would like you to try to finish up your Around the World PowerPoint presentations or glogs.
